Thinking about bringing home a little squishy-faced goofball, but can’t decide between a French Bulldog or a Boston Terrier? You’re not alone. These two breeds are among the most popular companion dogs out there, and at first glance, they seem pretty similar.
But the truth? Once you live with them, they’re very different dogs.
As someone who’s had Boston Terriers in my life since the age of six, I’ll admit, I might have a little bias. But don’t worry, I love Frenchies, too. Let’s break down the real differences so you can figure out which breed is the better fit for your life.
Size and Build: Kettlebell or Rubber Ball?
French Bulldogs are compact, sturdy, and dense—think kettlebell with ears. They stand 11 to 13 inches tall and, according to the AKC, should weigh under 28 pounds. Reality check? Many tip the scales at 30+ pounds and still believe they’re lap dogs.
Boston Terriers are built more like featherweight boxers—same height, but leaner, lighter, and surprisingly athletic. They typically weigh between 12 and 25 pounds, with a balanced, squared-off build.
Bottom line?
- Frenchie = heavier than they look (bricks in the paws)
- Boston = bouncy, portable, and springy
You’ll notice the difference the first time you carry one upstairs or load them into the car.

Appearance: Tuxedos or Wrinkles?
French Bulldogs are famous for their signature “bat ears,” wrinkled faces, and waddly little strut. Their tails are naturally short, and they have that distinctive arched back known as a “roach back.”
Boston Terriers? Sleeker silhouette, pointier bat ears, and their signature tuxedo coat—classic black, brindle, or seal with crisp white markings.
Both breeds typically live 10–13 years, but health plays a big role in lifespan, which brings us to…
Personality and Temperament: Clowns vs. Comedians
French Bulldogs are lovable teddy bears with attitude. They’re sweet, loyal, low-drama dogs who adore their people. They’re not exactly obedience champions, but they dominate the cuddle Olympics. Frenchies love to play, entertain, and nap, usually by 2 PM after their “big morning.”

Boston Terriers? Total comedians. Some are calm and snuggly, while others (like my Bostons, Chipper and Thumper) are toy hoarders, ball-chasers, and general mischief-makers. My little Boston, Spunky, once declared war on potatoes and hosta plants. RIP to the backyard.

Both breeds thrive on human interaction but bring their own unique spin to life’s adventures.
Energy Levels: Couch Companion or Zoomie Sprinter?
French Bulldogs are classic low-energy companions. A short walk, a quick game of tug, and they’re done. They’re heat-sensitive and drama-averse—perfect if your idea of cardio is walking to the fridge.
Boston Terriers bring moderate energy in short, intense bursts. Zoomies? Absolutely. I’ve walked my Bostons for 2–3 miles—but we take plenty of breaks. My Allegra can out-sprint my German Shepherds in the yard, but she crashes hard afterward.
No matter which breed you choose, daily play or walks are essential to keep them happy (and sane).
Health Considerations: What to Expect
Let’s be real: both breeds are brachycephalic, meaning they have flat faces, which brings health challenges.
French Bulldogs can face:
- Breathing issues
- Spinal problems
- Skin infections
- Eye concerns
- Reproduction almost always via C-section
Boston Terriers also have their issues:
- Big, buggy eyes prone to scratches, ulcers, cataracts
- Heat sensitivity
- Patellar luxation (slipping kneecaps)
- Many require C-sections too
That said, Bostons often have fewer health complications overall, especially those with a slightly longer muzzle. But here’s the catch: longer-muzzled Bostons are not breed standard, and typically don’t come from preservation breeders. If you’re paying breed standard prices, make sure you’re getting what you expect.
Pro Tip: Always meet the parents and work with reputable breeders who prioritize health.
